Vilas County Sheriff

Eagle River, WI 54521
Sheriff Joseph Fath
The Vilas County Jail is in charge of maintaining the Care, Custody, and Control of those housed within the facility. Currently, the facility is designed to house about 125 inmates.
The 'podular' design has nine modules, or pods, that can house 4 to 20 inmates, depending on the configuration. This allows for the appropriate separation and segregation of inmates.
The jail is staffed by fifteen full-time correctional officers, four shift sergeants, and the Jail Administrator. The jail is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.
Meals are provided by an on-site kitchen and daily medical needs are supplied by the Nursing Staff.
The jail has an average daily population that hovers near 100, including male and female inmates.
This daily total also includes forty State Inmates that are under contract housing for the Wisconsin State Prison System.
Inmates have access to a number of different programs and meetings. The programs include HSED, GED, several Bible Study groups serving a wide variety of denominations, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and several specialty programs.
This jail facility is relatively new, replacing a much smaller facility in 1999. The old facility had been out-grown for some time. The new facility is much larger, brighter, and well planned.
Efficient use of space, combined with excellent monitoring systems, makes this facility operate quite efficiently.
