Highway Commissioner: Troy Schalinske
The Vilas County Highway Department is given the responsibility to maintain 204 road miles of the county trunk highway system. Along with the maintenance and construction on the county system the department also contracts with Wisconsin Department of Transportation to provide services for the maintenance of 295 lane miles on the state highway system. This department is also available to assist townships with any maintenance needs they may require.
Our main facility and offices are located at 2104 N. Railroad Street (USH 45). Due to the large size of the county we have satellite shops at Arbor Vitae and Boulder Junction to handle the maintenance needs on the west side of the county.
The mission of this department is to provide the best possible roads, that budgets will allow, for the constituents of Vilas County and visitors, knowing that good roads play a critical role in economic development of the area with the flow of transportation of goods and services.
By providing technical assistance, manpower, equipment and financial aid, we are able to assist other local units of government to maintain an efficient transportation system serving communities, residents, and businesses throughout Vilas County.
