The Vilas County Forest participates in the County Forest Certification Program as overseen by WDNR under the forest management standards of the Sustainable Forest Initiative® [exit Vilas County] SFI-01617 SFI 100% and Forest Stewardship Council® [exit Vilas County] (FSC® COO6090) FSC 100%. Independent, third-party certification means management of the Vilas County Forest meets strict standards for ecological, social and economic sustainability, which directly corresponds to sales of forest products and jobs in Wisconsin. Audits under certification compare management practices to third party certification standards. Objective review is also instrumental in improving how we care for our forests. Detailed audit reports for Wisconsin County Forests are available on the following DNR web page:

Silviculture as practiced on the Vilas County Forest is the art and science of controlling the establishment, composition, structure, and growth of the forest to maintain and enhance the forest’s health and quality. Professional foresters and resource managers apply these practices throughout the Vilas County Forest using current scientific research and general silvicultural knowledge with sensitivity to meeting the diverse needs and values of society on a sustainable basis. The goal is to encourage vigor within all developmental stages of forest stands whether managed in an even aged or uneven aged system. Regulated cutting of timber is essential to the goals and objectives of the Vilas County Forest 15-year Comprehensive Land Use Plan, such as providing for local timber markets and enhancing wildlife habitat.
